Michael J. Gerhardt is Samuel Ashe Distinguished Professor in Constitutional Law at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, a scholar in residence at the National Constitutional Center, and a visiting scholar at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He is the author of five books, including The Forgotten Presidents: Their Untold Constitutional Legacy, selected as one of the best non-fiction books of 2013 by the Financial Times. He participated in the confirmation hearings for six of the nine justices currently on the Supreme Court, was the only joint witness in the impeachment proceedings against President Clinton, and is the first independent scholar selected by the Library of Congress to advise on the updating of the official United States Constitution Annotated.

Impeachment: What Everyone Needs to Know® is the step back and deep reflection on the law of impeachment that everyone needs now. Written in an accessible and lively question-and-answer format, it offers a timely explanation of the impeachment process from its very meaning to its role in politics today.

The book defines the scope of impeachable offenses, and how the Constitution provides alternative procedures and sanctions for addressing misconduct in office. It explains why the only two presidential impeachments, those of Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, failed to lead to conviction, and how the impeachments of federal judges illuminate the law and politics of the process.

As a legal expert and the only joint witness in the impeachment proceedings against President Clinton, author Michael J. Gerhardt also explores a question frequently asked-will Donald Trump be impeached? This book does not take a side in the debate over the possible impeachment of the president; instead, it is a primer for anyone eager to learn about impeachment's origins, practices, limitations, and alternatives.

A must read for non- lawyers, too. This is a terrific book answering questions non lawyers and lawyers alike have about impeachment- clearly written and easy to comprehend. The Q and A format makes it especially helpful. It’s well written and easy to understand in providing a clear and balanced history of impeachment and its role it in our government’s system of checks and balances.  Prof. Gerhardt is the top scholar on this topic. As an engaged citizen (non lawyer) wanting to learn more on this timely topic, I think it’s a Must Read.‘THE MISCONDUCT OF PUBLIC MEN’… ‘THE MISCONDUCT OF PUBLIC MEN’…WHAT EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT IMPEACHMENT –AND ‘WILL DONALD TRUMP BE IMPEACHED?’An appreciation by Elizabeth Robson Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers and Phillip Taylor MBE, Head of Chambersand Reviews Editor, “The Barrister”If you have lost count of the number of legal issues raised by the Trump presidency, you are not alone. One issue sheds its baleful light over all the others and that is the spectre of impeachment. As you’ll discover from this book by Professor Michael J. Gerhardt, the issue is complex and therefore all-the-more mesmerizing.Gerhardt, a legal expert, is especially noteworthy as ‘the only joint witness in the impeachment proceedings against President Clinton’. This is not too surprising when you discover that Gerhardt has made impeachment a special area of study, having written about it since 1989 (in an article for the Texas Law Review). His book ‘The Federal Impeachment Process: A Constitutional and Historical Analysis’ in 2018 has been published in a new third edition by the University of Chicago Press. Included in his formidable list of credentials is a distinguished professorship in Constitutional Law at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Many tend to regard impeachment as a peculiarly American concept, but it isn’t, as Gerhardt explains in detail. And yes, this is an American book published in America in both hardback and paperback by the Oxford University Press. What distinguishes the book is not only its erudition, but its accessibility to every reader, thanks to the author’s plain English approach and the robust question and answer format. The questions are short and to the point; the answers certainly aren’t. They are necessarily detailed, carefully argued, concise and consistently illuminating.‘What are the origins of impeachment?’ is just one example of a simple question with a discursive answer which identifies two sources: ‘England and the States.’ The States created ‘a uniquely American system of impeachment,’ says the author, adding that Americans (of the eighteenth century) ‘adapted the English procedures and precedents, as best they could, to their circumstances.’ It is explained further that one of the authorities used by the original ‘framers’ of the American constitution was William Blackstone’s “Commentaries on the Laws of England”.The book offers numerous examples of certain controversies that have arisen from perceived differences or ambiguities in the language in which the Constitution -- an 18th century document -- is written. Such luminaries as Alexander Hamilton -- (again a famous name on both sides of the Atlantic thanks to the wildly popular musical) -- expounded their views in the Federalist Papers on ‘the Constitution they had just drafted.’Discussing the types of offences that could be regarded as impeachable, Hamilton referred to ‘those offences which proceed from the misconduct of public men or… from the abuse or violation of some public trust. They are of a nature which may with peculiar propriety, be denominated POLITICAL as they relate chiefly to injuries done immediately to society itself.’ The capitalization is Hamilton’s.The upshot appears to be that impeachable offences must be those that are political in nature -- and determined by the case by case evolutionary process that characterises English common law. The point is made that not all crimes are impeachable and not all impeachable offences are necessarily crimes. The exact meaning/definition of the phrase ‘high crimes and misdemeanours’ elicits much discussion, which of course makes the book more interesting.Gerhardt’s stated aim in writing this book includes the asking of ‘every conceivable question about impeachment’ and putting forward in detail every pertinent answer in – we might add – the clearest possible manner. However, as no human -- and no human institution is perfect, neither is the impeachment process, as is demonstrated by the book’s concluding chapter which asks the question: ‘Will Donald Trump be Impeached?’ There follow some three dozen other questions ending with a quite lengthy discourse on his tweets on which controversy still rages. One can conclude from the book that there are any number of factors which determine not just whether an impeachment can take place, but whether it will be ultimately successful. The book’s appendix is a Table of US Impeachments (19 of them, mostly district judges and two presidents) dating from 1797 to 2010. The outcomes in each case are, well, interesting to say the least.Of special note is the author’s conclusion which certainly summarises the often-bewildering complexities of the impeachment process. While constitutional standards do not change, pubic mores and attitudes do, over the generations and it appears for the most part, that there seems to have been a reluctance to impeach. What is important, in the words of Gerhardt, is that ‘the American people must know that, if their leaders cannot maintain the standards of behaviour that the Constitution demands from them, they have the power to do something about it.’ Whether that power is exercised is the direction of the current president remains to be seen. If it is decided that the president should be impeached, we will expect a brand-new edition of this book. The publication date is cited as at 17th July 2018.

Mind in Motion Pdf

Title: Mind in Motion Pdf How Action Shapes Thought

An eminent psychologist offers a major new theory of human cognition: movement, not language, is the foundation of thought

When we try to think about how we think, we can't help but think of words. Indeed, some have called language the stuff of thought. But pictures are remembered far better than words, and describing faces, scenes, and events defies words. Anytime you take a shortcut or play chess or basketball or rearrange your furniture in your mind, you've done something remarkable: abstract thinking without words.

In Mind in Motion, psychologist Barbara Tversky shows that spatial cognition isn't just a peripheral aspect of thought, but its very foundation, enabling us to draw meaning from our bodies and their actions in the world. Our actions in real space get turned into mental actions on thought, often spouting spontaneously from our bodies as gestures. Spatial thinking underlies creating and using maps, assembling furniture, devising football strategies, designing airports, understanding the flow of people, traffic, water, and ideas. Spatial thinking even underlies the structure and meaning of language: why we say we push ideas forward or tear them apart, why we're feeling up or have grown far apart.

Like Thinking, Fast and Slow before it, Mind in Motion gives us a new way to think about how - and where - thinking takes place.

A tour de force There are many kinds of nonfiction books. Some feel like walking through a historical building following a fixed path with the help of an experienced tour guide who points out whatever we should pay attention to. That type of book takes you from point A (not knowing) to point B (knowing a bit more).Other nonfiction books are meandering, playful, disjointed. They aren't intended to be structured like linear narratives with a beginning and an end. They feel more like if the aforementioned tour guide met you in the lobby of the building, opened all doors inside it, and told you: “I'll give you a brief introduction to understand where you are. After that, explore at will; you can find more information about the wondrous objects inside this building in labels next to them. Feel free to read some and ignore others.” The goal of this type of book is not so much to teach; it's to inspire you and give you leads to new ideas, references, readings.Barbara Tversky's recent Mind in Motion belongs to this second type. After a few chapters that sounded a bit too basic, I felt enthralled by the breadth of the book. I underlined many passages, took copious notes on the margins and on the first blank pages, and wrote down the titles of many papers and books mentioned. If you work in design, or if you're interested in the inner workings of the brain, Mind in Motion is for you —maybe not because of its content per se, but because of the many thoughts it'll inspire.Trivial Pursuit I gave up about half way through. Almost all of the observations discussed left me wanting to add "no sh--" because they seemed so obvious. True insights are few and far between. The writing is choppy and awkward. In view of her late husband's work, the endorsements by Kahneman and Pinker seem like something akin to nepotism.I read nonfiction science extensively, with psychology being one of my primary areas of interest. The concern is that somebody wanting just a sample of the field will assume this book is representative.I truly try to avoid writing negative reviews. However, they sometimes seem necessary to make others aware of a bad experience with a book.

Grit Pdf

ISBN: B01D3AC5VU
Title: Grit Pdf The Power of Passion and Perseverance

In this must-listen book for anyone striving to succeed, pioneering psychologist Angela Duckworth shows parents, educators, students, and businesspeople - both seasoned and new - that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but a focused persistence called "grit".

Why do some people succeed and others fail? Sharing new insights from her landmark research on grit, MacArthur "genius" Angela Duckworth explains why talent is hardly a guarantor of success. Rather, other factors can be even more crucial, such as identifying our passions and following through on our commitments.

Drawing on her own powerful story as the daughter of a scientist who frequently bemoaned her lack of smarts, Duckworth describes her winding path through teaching, business consulting, and neuroscience, which led to the hypothesis that what really drives success is not genius but a special blend of passion and long-term perseverance. As a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Duckworth created her own "character lab" and set out to test her theory.

Here, she takes listeners into the field to visit teachers working in some of the toughest schools, cadets struggling through their first days at West Point, and young finalists in the National Spelling Bee. She also mines fascinating insights from history and shows what can be gleaned from modern experiments in peak performance. Finally, she shares what she's learned from interviewing dozens of high achievers - from J.P. Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon to the cartoon editor of The New Yorker to Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll.

Winningly personal, insightful, and even life changing, Grit is a book about what goes through your head when you fall down and how that - not talent or luck - makes all the difference.

Nothing new here. Save yourself the read. First off, this book is very well written. Has a nice flow to it and is easy to understand. That said...This book reminds me of how the government will spend millions of dollars on a study to tell you something you already know: "After an exhaustive multi-year study costing $10 million dollars, we have concluded that ice is cold to the touch." This book is very much like that. I can't think of one single concept presented in the book that isn't already common knowledge. Example: Hard work and perseverance can make up for lack of talent. Who doesn't already know this? Here's another one: People who like what they are doing (passion), usually do better than those who do not. Every single point made in this book is about that profound. And, if you are looking for proven ways to increase you own "grit," forget about it--they are not there. This material might make for a good 10-page whitepaper, but it isn't nearly deep enough to make into a 300 page book. Because of that, there is just major filler in the form of stories about successful people.Lastly, like another reviewer pointed out, this book has a self-righteous undertone to it. The author burns a lot of ink making sure you think she's smart and important.I'll save you $20: The most successful people work really hard at something they like and don't give up.I found this book to be the perfect hybrid of informative and motivating I found this book to be the perfect hybrid of informative and motivating. If you're looking for a book that will help educate you as to what you should do in your life and how you can be successful doing it, then this is the book for you. It lays out chapter-by-chapter both the science and the steps you'll need to take in order to make changes in your life that will lead you to success or at least put you on the path towards it. The mix of anecdotes, profiles, scientific studies, and personal stories all combine to form a really easy-to-read and educational book that is laid out and displayed in a simple yet interesting way. Below I took a crack at the things I'm going to do now going forward as a result of reading this book:1. Define what success looks like (i.e., I want to get into politics and would eventually like to become a Senator)2. Clearly define my goals in terms of short-term, medium-term and long-term3. Assign myself stretch goals4. Reflect and learn from any obstacles or challenges or failures faced5. Begin deliberate practice in my field (repeatedly stepping outside my comfort zone and trying activities beyond my current abilities)6. Seek a coach and / or mentor7. Gather and then grow a support network of friends, family, and industry professionals8. Become even more obsessed / interested in my field and consume myself with news, books, articles, lectures, etc.9. Learn from others who are where I want to be10. Never become complacent or satisfied
