"Filled with compassionate, caring stories by a wise healer and scientist, this book will appeal to all who are interested in understanding how children heal."―Lynn Ponton, MD, author of The Romance of Risk"This book demands and deserves attention from parents, educators, policymakers, courts, and therapists. Highly recommended."―Library Journal, starred review"Perry has learned a thing or two about how not to raise a prospective sociopath.... He makes a powerful case for early intervention for disruptive children to prevent adult sociopathy."―Booklist"In beautifully written, fascinating accounts of experience working with emotionally stunted and traumatized children, child psychiatrist Perry educates readers about how early-life stress and violence affects the developing brain. He offers simple yet vivid illustrations of the stress response and the brain's mechanisms with facts and images that crystallize in the mind without being too detailed and confusing."―Publishers Weekly"I have never encountered a child advocate with a better mind, a bigger heart, or a more generous spirit than Bruce Perry. This book captures the essence of his insights and the heroism of his actions on behalf of children who have encountered the dark side of human experience."―James Garbarino, PhD, author of Lost Boys: Why Our Sons Turn Violent and How We Can Save Them"For many years, Bruce Perry's work has been deserving of our highest praise. This book is his crowning achievement, the ultimate combination of science and humanity."―Joel A. Dvoskin, PhD, ABPP, University of Arizona College of Medicine, and President, American Psychology-Law Society"In this harrowing but profoundly humane book, Perry and Szalavitz provide an all too timely, utterly engrossing account of traumatized children's lives.... Once I opened it, I could not put it down."―Sarah Blaffer Hrdy, author of Mother Nature: Maternal Instincts and How They Shape the Human Species"The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog is Bruce Perry's finest achievement.... Anyone who wants to understand childhood trauma and its heartbreaking consequences must read this book."―Andrew Vachss, best-selling author of Mask Market and founder and national advisory board member of PROTECT: The National Association to Protect Children. Bruce D. Perry, MD, PhD, is the senior fellow of the ChildTrauma Academy, a not-for-profit organization based in Houston, TX, and an adjust professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago.

A renowned psychiatrist reveals how trauma affects children--and outlines the path to recovery

"Fascinating and upbeat.... Dr. Perry is both a world-class creative scientist and a compassionate therapist." --Mary Pipher, PhD, author of Reviving Ophelia

How does trauma affect a child's mind--and how can that mind recover? In the classic The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog, Dr. Perry explains what happens to the brains of children exposed to extreme stress and shares their lessons of courage, humanity, and hope. Only when we understand the science of the mind and the power of love and nurturing, can we hope to heal the spirit of even the most wounded child.

A Hopeful Guide to Better Future Generations Bruce Perry is a psychologist with extensive study and experience in his field. Although many adults, arrogant parents in particular, think they know what is best for their children under all circumstances, Perry shows that by looking at parenting from many angles, it is possible to provide children with better environments, happier lives and more upstanding and productive lives as adults. As the old meme goes, when children see adults show kindness to animals and the less fortunate, they internalise these lessons and apply them in their own lives. Brutal and violent parenting, on the other hand, can lead to bitter adults that see everyone else as their enemies. Having never been shown trust, they assume that everyone else is as untrustworthy as the brutes that "looked after" them as children and teenagers.A wise young mother, Mama P, exemplifies the ideal maternal approach to parenting. Children need what they need, and they should not be put into boxes of "toddler," "adolescent," "teenager" or "male" or "female" and treated according to social mores and stereotypes. No qualified doctor would think of prescribing insulin to a non-diabetic. Some children, starved for affection by callous or simply ignorant parents, will fail to reach their full potential, even when it comes to something as basic as growth. Young children cannot simply become physically healthy adults simply by ingesting nutrients. If human contact isn't there, toddlers will remain short-statured and could even die from neglect alone. A study in the 1940s found that over a third of neglected infants simply die. This was described in great detail in Failure to Thrive: a Practice Guide by Chichester and published in the United Kingdom.Perry details several riveting case studies, including a young girl who was raped, children who were fortunately rescued from the Branch Davidian cult, and one victim whose mother abused him to gain attention (she suffered from Munchausen's by Proxy). The trauma recounted within will no doubt be difficult reading, but this is one of the most important non-fiction books in the 21st century. Finally, we have empirical evidence that demolishes any last hope paternalistic despots have of defending their style of "parenting." Caretakers can say "suck it up" or "learn to love yourself" until they're blue in the face, but such attitudes only lead to misery and destructive self-replicating spirals.Children need to be loved before they can learn to love themselves.Educational I have learned so much about how the developing brains of children are affected after experiences with trauma and/or high levels of stress. As an educator, this information is valuable and an important reminder to not treat every student as if they have had the same experiences at home. I highly recommend this book to anyone who interacts/works with children and anyone else who may be interested in the contents of this book.Worth buying. Recommend gifting. I can't think of any kind of person I wouldn't recommend this book for. If you're a parent or work with children professionally this is a mandatory read. If you, YES YOU reading this, are age 14+ I highly recommend this book for you as well, and I am extremely conservative about my reading material. The two cons I came upon were that a few pages in a later chapter was confusing to read, it rapidly went back and forth through the timeline when Dr. Perry worked with a particular patient. It was a bit confusing but not unmanageable, on the upside this section was brief. Secondly, I felt not that it was short, rather I could have read an additional 200 pages without losing the slightest interest on the topics discussed.

Highly recommend to parents with young children with Autism! An amazing resource!! Every parent who has a young child with autism needs this! I practiced ABA using the early start Denver model by sally rogers and highly recommend this book to parents! It helps promoting play skills, communication, and ways for parents to connect with their children! Not just for Autism This book is great! It gives you real-world practical guidance on how to better connect with any child. My 18 month old isn’t diagnosed with ASD but I was looking for ideas for games and things we could do to help him connect more and build his language skills. We’ve had more fun in the last week after I started using this book than we have in the past 17 months. Ok, that’s a bit of an exaggeration but it’s amazing to see how much he’s blossomed. The changes were almost overnight. He’s picked up 3 new words and is so much more social at daycare that even the teachers noticed. All from simply understanding how to engage with him, build his confidence and creating opportunities for learning in our daily routine.Ever kid should come with this book as the instruction manual. It’s made me a better father.Invaluable resource in a sea of information I was just saying, why isn't there a handbook that comes with a diagnosis? This is about as close as it gets. But my GOSH it chaps my ass when authors of parenting books always assume the parents are married. An entire section on taking care of your spouse and nill on handling the news with your ex-spouse, ex-S.O. or co-parent - 32% of families do not have married parents... it seems like something small to pick at but I'm hoping they see this and catch up to the times so everyone feels included. My son's dad and I have therapists to help us cope, but most people aren't so fortunate and need to hear it in places like this.

Secrets of the Millionaire Mind Download

ISBN: 0060763280
Title: Secrets of the Millionaire Mind Pdf Mastering the Inner Game of Wealth
Author: T. Harv Eker
Published Date: 2005-02-15
Page: 224

Eker's claim to fame is that he took a $2,000 credit card loan, opened "one of the first fitness stores in North America," turned it into a chain of 10 within two and a half years and sold it in 1987 for a cool (but somewhat modest-seeming) $1.6 million. Now the Vancouver-based entrepreneur traverses the continent with his "Millionaire Mind Intensive Seminar," on which this debut motivational business manual is based. What sets it apart is Eker's focus on the way people think and feel about money and his canny, class-based analyses of broad differences among groups. In rat-a-tat, "Let me explain" seminar-speak, Eker asks readers to think back to their childhoods and pick apart the lessons they passively absorbed from parents and others about money. With such psychological nuggets as "Rich people focus on opportunities/ Poor people focus on obstacles," Eker puts a positive spin on stereotypes, arguing that poverty begins, or rather, is allowed to continue, in one's imagination first, with actual material life becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. To that end, Eker counsels for admiration and against resentment, for positivity, self-promotion and thinking big and against wallowing, self-abnegation and small-mindedness. While much of the advice is self-evident, Eker's contribution is permission to think of one's financial foibles as a kind of mental illness—one, he says, that has a ready set of cures. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Eker, a multimillionaire, teaches us how to become rich. He believes thoughts lead to feelings, which lead to actions, which lead to results, and hence the key to attaining great wealth begins with thinking--like rich people do. He offers new ways of thinking and acting that will lead to new and different results, and he tells us, "Success is a learnable skill. You can learn to succeed at anything." The book emphasizes Eker's 17 principles for amassing wealth, which include: rich people believe that they create their life, while poor people believe "life happens to me." Rich people focus on opportunities, while poor people focus on obstacles. Rich people act in spite of fear, while poor people let fear stop them. Rich people constantly learn and grow, while poor people think they know enough. This is an obvious infomercial for the author's training seminars; however, although many may not agree with all of Eker's ideas, his book offers thought-provoking advice and valuable insight. Secrets of the Millionaire Mind reveals the missing link between wanting success and achieving it!

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to get rich easily, while others are destined for a life of financial struggle? Is the difference found in their education, intelligence, skills, timing, work habits, contacts, luck, or their choice of jobs, businesses, or investments?

The shocking answer is: None of the above!

In his groundbreaking Secrets of the Millionaire Mind, T. Harv Eker states: "Give me five minutes, and I can predict your financial future for the rest of your life!" Eker does this by identifying your "money and success blueprint." We all have a personal money blueprint ingrained in our subconscious minds, and it is this blueprint, more than anything, that will determine our financial lives. You can know everything about marketing, sales, negotiations, stocks, real estate, and the world of finance, but if your money blueprint is not set for a high level of success, you will never have a lot of money—and if somehow you do, you will most likely lose it! The good news is that now you can actually reset your money blueprint to create natural and automatic success.

Secrets of the Millionaire Mind is two books in one. Part I explains how your money blueprint works. Through Eker's rare combination of street smarts, humor, and heart, you will learn how your childhood influences have shaped your financial destiny. You will also learn how to identify your own money blueprint and "revise" it to not only create success but, more important, to keep and continually grow it.

In Part II you will be introduced to seventeen "Wealth Files," which describe exactly how rich people think and act differently than most poor and middle-class people. Each Wealth File includes action steps for you to practice in the real world in order to dramatically increase your income and accumulate wealth.

If you are not doing as well financially as you would like, you will have to change your money blueprint. Unfortunately your current money blueprint will tend to stay with you for the rest of your life, unless you identify and revise it, and that's exactly what you will do with the help of this extraordinary book. According to T. Harv Eker, it's simple. If you think like rich people think and do what rich people do, chances are you'll get rich too!

I hate it when I buy a book and it turns ... I hate it when I buy a book and it turns out to be an out and out sales pitch. Nothing to learn here. Don't buy.World Class Excellent book for putting yourself inside of the heads of successful people. It allows you to see things differently, would recommend to everyone who hasn't had a parent/mentor-figure to talk about building wealth, pursuing opportunities, and personal development.I came from a poor family and everyone I've ever known has been poor This book really changed my life and my business. I came from a poor family and everyone I've ever known has been poor. This book re-wired my brain for success and money and helped me see things from a viewpoint I never would have had access to! I see now how I had been living in the darkness and there is a whole different world out there full of abundance! I no longer resent rich people; I learned to love myself as well and how to change my money blueprint. Thank you T. Harv Eker!

The Lost Art of Listening, Second Edition Download

ISBN: B01M1C4Y1M
Title: The Lost Art of Listening, Second Edition Pdf How Learning to Listen Can Improve Relationships

One person talks; the other listens. It's so basic that we take it for granted. Unfortunately, most of us think of ourselves as better listeners than we actually are. Why do we so often fail to connect when speaking with family members, romantic partners, colleagues, or friends? How do emotional reactions get in the way of real communication? This thoughtful, witty, and empathic book has already helped over 100,000 people break through conflicts and transform their personal and professional relationships. Experienced therapist Michael P. Nichols, PhD, provides vivid examples, easy-to-learn techniques, and practical exercises for becoming a better listener and making yourself heard and understood, even in difficult situations.

As a personal mastery trainer and coach I highly recommend this book As a personal mastery trainer and coach I highly recommend this book. Everyone and every relationship can benefit from understanding and applying the knowledge professor Nichols puts forth. It's an easy read and is very practical. I have been teaching listening skills for two decades and learned how to listen better by reading this book! This Book WILL Change Your Life This book WILL change your life and the lives of everyone you touch. I listened to it on Audible.com, which was ideal, because the audio version is well narrated and can truly "sink in" more than text can. It covers much more than what one would expect from a "listening" self-help book. It is not just about "active listening" with playback to the speaker every few minutes. It is about deep listening and truly "getting" what someone else needs. Everyone playing the role of spouse, parent, child, teacher, employer, or friend should read this book and put its wise ideas into practice!A must read for those in relationships Read the Epilogue first then again at the end. This section gives such a great philosophical overview (the author would hate that reference) and puts you in the open state to look critically at yourself and make some great changes. I will buy copies for my recently married children.
